Card cloning and related scams are on the rise in India, affecting both ordinary and seasoned users.

Recent cases, such as ₹6,84,000 stolen from a former MLA via ATM skimming and ₹2,80,00,000 siphoned in Bengaluru through a gifted smartphone, show how fraudsters exploit ATMs and digital devices.

Staying alert and taking simple precautions can help protect your finances from such sophisticated scams.

Quick Synopsis

  • Fraudsters exploit ATMs, petrol pumps, and online transactions.
  • Methods include skimming devices, malware, and phishing scams.
  • Victims face financial loss and identity theft.
  • Precautions and prompt reporting can minimise damage.

What is a Cloned Credit Card?

A cloned credit card is a duplicate of an original credit card, created using stolen card data. Fraudsters use skimmers, malware, or online breaches to obtain information.

Unlike skimming, which only steals data, cloning involves copying the information onto a new card to make unauthorised transactions, such as withdrawals or online purchases.

Examples of Fraud Using a Cloned Credit Card in India

Case Study 1: SBI Credit Card Scam

In a large-scale fraud, 18 members of a syndicate stole ₹2,60,00,000 crore from 350 SBI customers. Insiders at a call centre leaked customer data and enabled fraudsters to trick cardholders into sharing OTPs and CVVs.

The stolen data was used to buy e-gift cards and domestic flights, which were sold for cash and cryptocurrency.

Case Study 2: Petrol Pump Card Cloning

An Indian customer lost over ₹1,00,000 when his card was cloned at a petrol pump. Despite failed transaction attempts, his PIN was captured, and the card was later used for unauthorised charges.

Experts advise avoiding swiping cards at ATMs or petrol pumps and using tap-to-pay or UPI for safer transactions.

Credit Card Decline – Primary Reasons Explained

How Do Fraudsters Clone Your Credit Cards?

Magnetic Stripe Cards

Cards store static data on a stripe at the back. Fraudsters use skimming devices at ATMs, petrol pumps, or POS terminals to copy this information. This method is most vulnerable to card-present fraud, where cloned cards are used for physical transactions.

EMV Chip Cards

These cards generate a unique code for each transaction, offering stronger security. However, sophisticated fraudsters can sometimes bypass chip protection using advanced tools. EMV cards are targeted less frequently but are not immune.

Contactless Cards

RFID-enabled ‘tap to pay’ cards transmit information wirelessly. While safer against skimming, these cards still have magnetic stripes and chips, leaving partial vulnerability. Fraudsters can exploit card-not-present fraud, using stolen data online or selling it to other criminals.

What Can Fraudsters Do with Cloned Credit Cards?

  1. ATM Withdrawals: They withdraw cash using the cloned card, just like the original.
  2. Online Purchases: Stolen card details enable purchases without needing the physical card.
  3. Contactless Fraud: Cards with tap-to-pay features allow small transactions without a PIN.
  4. Selling Card Information: Some sell card data on the dark web, while others buy and misuse it.

How to Prevent Card Cloning and What to Do if Your Card is Cloned?

Precautionary Measures

The first step is prevention. You should take the following preventive measures to limit the chances of credit card cloning:

  • Use Chip-Based Cards: These generate a unique code for each transaction, making cloning difficult.
  • Enable Alerts: Set up SMS or email alerts for all transactions to spot unauthorised activity quickly.
  • Avoid Unknown Machines: Do not swipe your card at unfamiliar ATMs, petrol pumps, or shops that may have skimmers.
  • Use Virtual Cards: Banks provide temporary virtual cards for online purchases, which become useless if stolen.
  • Cover PIN Pads: Shield your PIN at ATMs and payment machines to prevent cameras from capturing it.

Remedial Measures

In case you have been a prey to the credit card cloning scam, you must immediately do the following:

  • Report Immediately: Contact your issuer to block and replace the card.
  • Check Transactions: Review statements for any fraudulent charges and report them promptly.
  • Update Credentials: Change passwords and enable two-factor authentication for linked accounts.
  • Escalate if Needed: If unresolved within 90 days, report to the RBI or National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
  • Stay Vigilant: Monitor future transactions closely to detect further fraud early.

Cloned credit card fraud often stays hidden until you notice unauthorised charges, payment alerts, or unexplained deductions; by then, your funds and credit score could already be at risk.
