EPF Interest Rate for 2026: Calculate Your EPF Contribution Interest Rate
The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) interest rate for 2025 has been fixed at 8.25%, the same as in the previous financial year. For salaried employees, this interest is added to their contributions, helping them steadily build a larger retirement corpus.
In this section, you will find the latest PF interest rate updates, the method of calculating EPF interest, and the details needed for accurate computation.
Key Highlights
- The entire EPF contribution and interest are not tax-free.
- EPF interest is calculated every month.
- Interest on PF accounts is credited annually.
Latest Update on the Interest Rate of EPF in 2026
- The Ministry of Finance agreed upon an 8.25% EPF interest rate for 2026 (current EPF interest rate).
- EPF interest is tax-free up to a certain limit.
- A minimum life insurance coverage of ₹50,000 comes with an EPF account if the account holder dies without completing 1 year of continuous service.
Calculation of EPF Interest
Each month, an EPF interest rate is calculated, but the amount is credited to the account only at the end of a financial year. Here is how an interest calculation works for an employee's EPF:
Basic Salary + Dearness Allowance = ₹40,000
Employee’s EPF Contribution = 12% of ₹40,000 = ₹4,800
Employer’s EPS Contribution (up to ₹1,250) = ₹1,250
Employer’s EPF Contribution = ₹4,800 - ₹ 1,250 = ₹3,550
Total EPF Contribution per Month = ₹4,800 + ₹3,550 = ₹8,350
For example, the EPF interest rate for 2024 to 2025 is 8.25%. The monthly interest rate is calculated as 8.25% / 12 = 0.6875%. Interest is calculated at the end of each month, but it is credited only at the end of the financial year.
Assuming the employee joined on 1 April 2024, contributions will begin for the financial year 2024–2025.
Total EPF Contribution for April = ₹8,350
Interest for April = Nil (No interest for the first month)
EPF Balance at the End of April = ₹8,350
EPF Contribution for May = ₹8,350
Total EPF Balance by May = ₹16,700
Interest for May = ₹16,700 X 0.6875% = ₹114.81
Since EPF interest is calculated at the end of each month, no interest is applicable to the first EPF contribution. This approach is followed for all subsequent contributions within the year. The interest and balance accumulated from previous years are carried forward and factored into the interest calculation for the next financial year.
Details Required to Calculate EPF Interest Rate
- An employee’s current age
- Present EPF balance
- A monthly basic salary and dearness allowance that totals no more than ₹15,000
- Employee’s retirement age
- The proportion of contributions made to the EPF

Taxation on EPF Contributions and Interest
Employee contributions and interest exceeding ₹2.5 lakh in a financial year are taxable as this income is categorised as ‘income from other sources’. However, government employees (with no employer contribution) enjoy a higher limit up to ₹5 lakh.
Let us consider the following example to understand EPF taxation:
Suppose Mr X, a private employee, contributes ₹4 lakh to his EPF account in 2025. He can enjoy tax-free contributions up to ₹2.5 lakh. However, for ₹1.5 lakh, TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) will apply. Further, ₹1.5 lakh attracts an interest of ₹12,375 at 8.25% which will be taxable.
EPF Interest Rate for Inactive Accounts
In FY 2011-12, the EPFO proposed halting interest payments on EPF accounts with minimal or no contributions for over three years. Later, this decision was reversed in 2016. As a result, even accounts that have been inactive for more than three years continue to earn interest at the prevailing rates.
However, interest will not be credited to accounts that have become inoperative, which generally occurs after the scheme tenure ends, or when an individual reaches the age of 58 without withdrawing their EPF balance.
Final Word
EPF interest rate might change every year based on the discretion of the Ministry of Finance and EPFO (Employee Provident Fund Organisation). Even though it offers a fixed interest income, other instruments like fixed deposits and bonds offer higher interest rates.
