Gold is one of the most popular metals in India serving as both a reliable investment option and a vital element of traditional ceremonies. Gold is considered auspicious and brought on every occasion but its purity is a concern. With gold you’ll often hear terms like 24K, 22K, or 18K. These numbers represent the karat of gold, which is simply a way of measuring how pure the gold is. Understanding gold karats is important because it not only affects the look and durability of your jewelry but also its price and resale value. In this blog we will discuss these gold karats in detail.

Gold Karats

What is a Gold Karat

Gold karat is a measuring unit of the purity of gold which represents the proportion of gold present in an alloy. It is measured on the scale of 24 i.e. 24 karat which means it is 99.9% pure gold. For example, 18K gold has 18/24 parts pure gold (≈75%) and 6 parts other metals. 24K gold means 24/24 parts gold (≈99.9–100% pure). Lower karats mix in harder metals (like copper or silver) to strengthen the gold; the karat number goes down as purity decreases.

Common Gold Karats and Purity Levels

Gold purity is marked by karats for its purity level, each karat has its purity level. Most common examples include:

  • 24K gold - Pure gold. (≈99.9–100% gold; hallmark “999” or “999.9”.
  • 22K gold - 91.6–91.7% gold. (Hallmark “916” in India).
  • 18K gold - 75.0% gold (Hallmark “750”).
  • 14K gold - ≈58.3% gold (Hallmark “583” or “585”).
  • 10K gold - 41.7% gold (Hallmark “417”).

Uses of Different Karat Gold

DIfferent gold karats are used for different purpose, below are some of the use cases-

24K (Pure gold):

Used mainly for investment. Pure gold is soft and cannot be used in jewellery so is common for bullion, coins and bars.

22K (91.7%):

The standard for traditional Indian jewelry. It has a rich yellow color and decent durability, ideal for heavy bridal sets, temple jewelry and festival pieces.

18K (75%):

Common in fine or designer jewelry (e.g. diamond rings, luxury watches, international wedding bands). It balances gold content with strength, so it holds gemstones well and is popular for modern/diamond-studded pieces.

14K (58.3%):

Widely used for everyday jewelry (rings, chains, earrings, bracelets). It is more durable and affordable than higher karats. In Western markets, 14K is very popular because it resists scratches yet still looks like gold.

10K (41.7%):

Rare in India (not hallmarked), but common elsewhere (e.g. USA) as very hard and inexpensive jewelry. 10K is the minimum to be legally “gold” in many countries and is used in affordable, durable pieces.

Hallmarking and BIS Standards in India

India’s Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) hallmarks gold jewelry to certify purity. Since June 2021, hallmarking is mandatory for 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K gold sold in India. A BIS hallmark has three parts:

  • BIS Logo: A triangle with a tick (indicates BIS certification).
  • Purity Mark: The karat and fineness, e.g. “22K916” means 22K gold (91.6% purity). (Common marks: 22K=916, 18K=750, 14K=585
  • HUID Code: A unique six-character alphanumeric number for each item. This Hallmark Unique ID can be verified via the BIS app or website.

A correct hallmark assures buyers of the gold’s purity and authenticity. Licensed Assaying & Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) authorized by BIS perform the purity tests (using XRF or fire assay) and apply the mark.

Identifying Genuine Gold: Hallmarks and Markings

To check if gold is genuine, look for clear, official markings:

BIS Hallmark:

Find the BIS logo and purity stamp (like 22K916, 18K750, 14K585). These must be crisp and not worn off.

Karat Stamp:

Legitimate gold jewelry usually has a karat stamp (e.g. “24K”, “18K”). These should match the hallmark’s numeric code. For instance, a piece marked “916” should also say 22K.

Jeweler’s ID:

Reputable jewelers have a registered ID mark next to the hallmark. Check the jeweler is BIS-certified (lists are on the BIS site).

HUID Verification:

You can verify the six-character HUID by scanning or entering it in BIS’s official portal to confirm details of the item.

Professional Testing:

If uncertain, gold can be tested by an AHC (assay labs), or with professional tools (XRF analyzers, acid tests).

Buying only hallmarked gold from licensed jewellers greatly reduces the risk of fraud. The hallmark and karat stamps are legally binding indicators of purity and can be trusted as long as they are genuine and match each other.

Tips to Choose the Right Karat for Buying Gold

Here are some of the points to keep in mind when choosing the right karat for buying gold

Wedding or Bridal Jewelry:

In India, 22K is the traditional choice for bridal sets and gifts (rich color, cultural value). However, some modern brides opt for 18K or even 14K (lighter weight, contemporary designs with diamonds). For very elaborate traditional pieces, 22K is favored; for English-cut gems or filigree work, 18K may be used.

Daily Wear Jewelry:

For everyday use (like rings or bracelets), durability matters. Many recommend 14K or 18K gold since they resist scratches better. (Pure 24K would get dinged easily.) In India, people often wear 22K necklaces and chains daily, but for bangles and rings, 18K/14K are practical choices.

Investment (Gold Coins/Bars):

Always use 24K (99.9%) bullion for gold investment. Gold coins and bars are made from nearly pure gold (fineness 999 or 999.9) because this maximizes value. (For example, India’s Sovereign Gold Bonds and RBI gold coins are 24K.)

Gifts and Festivals:

For auspicious gifts (muhurta occasions, Diwali, etc.), 22K is often chosen as a blend of tradition and value. In some cases, small 24K coins or “mohurs” are used as offerings or heirlooms.

Budget or Fashion Jewelry:

If the budget is tight or a very durable piece is needed (like a charm bracelet), 14K/10K may be used. Note that 10K is not hallmarked in India, so 14K (585 mark) is the practical minimum for verification. 14K offers a good balance of cost, look, and strength for fashion jewelry.

Conclusion

Understanding gold karats is the key to making smart choices whether you’re buying jewelry, planning an investment, or giving a meaningful gift. While 24K gold carries maximum purity and value, lower karats like 22K, 18K, or 14K offer a balance between strength, beauty, and affordability depending on your needs. By knowing the differences in gold karats and trusting only hallmarked pieces, you can enjoy your gold purchase with both confidence and peace of mind.
