Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, is a prominent Hindu festival that celebrates the sacred bond between siblings. Most people following the Hindu lunar calendar eagerly look forward to this festival every year.

Like each time, the Raksha Bandhan 2025 will bring bank holidays in many states like Gujarat, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Beyond these states, the rich tradition of Rakhi holds significant symbolic value throughout India and is deeply cherished by crores of Indians.

For a comprehensive overview of the Raksha Bandhan holiday, please continue reading this blog.

Raksha Bandhan 2025 Time and Date

In 2025, the Rakhi festival is scheduled to be celebrated on 9th August. As per the calendar, this day is a Saturday.

This year, the sacred Purnima Tithi or full moon day for the Raksha Bandhan ritual will start from 2:12 PM on Friday (8th August) and end at 1:24 PM on Saturday (9th August). Typically, the thread-tying ceremony is set to be performed between 6:18 AM and 1:24 PM on the actual holiday, i.e., 9th August for the year 2025.

Besides being a bank holiday in a few selected Indian states, Raksha Bandhan is observed as a public holiday throughout most of northern India and also in several South Indian states.

Importance of Raksha Bandhan

On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, siblings vouch to protect their elder and younger brothers and sisters from all sorts of adversities in life. It leads to an emotional connection between a brother and sister and speaks highly of the Hindu culture and traditions.

During the Raksha Bandhan event, the sisters express their love and commitment by tying a raksha sutra - a symbol of protection, around their brother's wrists. Besides this, the Raksha Bandhan celebration also holds significance in other aspects, a couple of which are discussed below.

Importance of Raksha Bandhan for Farmers

The celebration of Raksha Bandhan is a bit different for the farmer community in different parts of India. In many areas, the Shravani celebration is conducted on this auspicious day to pray for a favourable harvesting season during the upcoming months.

For farming activities, people look forward to the monsoon as they can receive adequate water for cultivation. So, farmers in states like Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand observe Rakhi to pray for a bountiful harvest and adore the cultivable soil.

Importance of Raksha Bandhan for Fishers

The fishing community in different Indian states, in addition to farmers, will also attach great importance to the celebration of Raksha Bandhan 2025.

Some states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and Gujarat have a widespread fishing community that entirely depends on the sea to support their living. Both the maritime environment and fishes are greatly impacted by the monsoon. Hence, for favourable yields, these people hold the rituals of Nariyal Purnima during Raksha Bandhan to please God Varuna.

The monsoon season that brings the joy of Raksha Bandhan also embodies new rays of change and paves the way for a new chapter in our lives. Hence, various communities of Brahmins in South Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala celebrate this time of the year by observing Shravan Purnima as Upakaram.

Now that you know how prominent the Rakhi festival is throughout India, you need to plan your financial activities beforehand. It will ensure that no important transactions are delayed due to a holiday.

Raksha Bandhan Ritual Process

As earlier mentioned, Raksha Bandhan is a highly revered and cherished festival in India. It comprises an iconic ceremonial ritual, also known as the ‘Pooja Vidhi’.

During that time, sisters arrange a modest pooja thali decorated with rakhi, sweets, grains of rice, etc. In addition, the houses are decorated with oil lamps or diyas and vermillion powder. Next, the sisters initiate the ritual process by gently waving the oil lamp in circles before their beloved brothers and applying a tilak on their foreheads.

Following the Aarti, the sisters now tie rakhi on their brothers’ wrists and offer heartwarming prayers wishing their well-being and prosperity. Now, the brothers give gifts to their sisters which symbolises their unconditional love. They also pledge to protect their sisters from all danger.

Overall, this Pooja Vidhi fosters a spiritual setting and strengthens the brother-sister bond. It makes Raksha Bandhan a genuinely special and divine occasion.
