Mahavira Jayanti is the celebration of the birth of Lord Mahavira. It is observed as a holiday in many parts of India on this day. There are a lot of people who have only fruits throughout the day. 

Lord Mahavira was a Tirthankar who taught people the way of walking on the road of liberation to attain spiritual awakening and enlightenment. For example, devotees on this day visit various Jain temples to offer prayers to Lord Mahavira. 

When Is Mahavir Jayanti 2026? 

The Mahavir Jayanti holiday is on the 31st of March this year (2026). It is a gazetted holiday in India. This means that the state, national and local level governmental workplaces remain closed during this day. It is because Mahavira Jayanti is a significant occasion for the Jain community – the banks remain closed during this day as well. Hence, you need to make sure that you plan financial and banking activities accordingly beforehand.

History of Mahavir Jayanti 

As established before, Mahavira Jayanti is the celebration of the birth of Lord Mahavira. He was born on the 13th day of the month of Chaitra (according to the Hindu calendar). Maahvira was born to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. 

Later on, he goes on to renounce his title, status and possessions to seek the truth of life and enlightenment. The preached morals, ethics, practices and principles during his later part of life are what gave origin to the celebration and festivities of Mahavir Jayanti. 

What Is the Significance of Mahavir Jayanti 2026? 

When Mahavira was just 30 years old, he renounced his crown and worldly possessions to set on a spiritual path. He spent a total of 12 years in exile away from all kinds of worldly pleasures and continuously meditated to lead an ascetic life. He preached nonviolence (Ahimsa) and got the name Sage Vardhamana for having exceptional control over his own senses. By seeking spiritual freedom and truth he attained enlightenment when he reached the age of 72.

Mahavir Jayanti 2026 holds great significance as it marks his birth anniversary, celebrating his teachings of Non-Violence or Ahimsa, Truth (Satya), Non-Chastity (Brahmacharya) and Non-Stealing (Asatya), which continue to inspire millions worldwide.

How Is Mahavir Jayanti Observed? 

Mahavir Jayanti celebration occurs in a very ceremonious way. This is the day of preaching about the teachings of Lord Mahavira. A procession takes place on this day in the form of a "Rath yatra" with the idol of Mahavira placed on top. 

Jain temples are decorated on the occasion of Mahavira Jayanti. They get decorated with flags and the followers distribute clothing and food to the needy.  Jainism strongly believes in wildlife protection and hence Jains donate actively to stop animal killings. 

Other than practising such charitable acts, people pray to Mahavira. The devotees, on this day, actively participate in meditation. Mahavira preached this practice as well. It frees the mind of all evil and helps a person get clarity.
