Festivals in April 2026

Here’s an overview of the holidays in April 2026:

  • Maundy Thursday: Maundy Thursday is a Christian holy day observed during Holy Week, just before Good Friday. It commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his disciples, where he established the practice of Holy Communion (Eucharist).
  • Good Friday (April 3): Good Friday is an auspicious day for the Christian community, which will be celebrated on 18th April. On this April holiday, Christians in India visit churches and engage in prayers, while many institutions may remain closed or have reduced working hours. Good Friday is considered a crucial event in Christianity because it represents the sacrifices in Jesus' life.
  • Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14): 14th April of each year is observed as Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti, to commemorate the memory of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. In addition to being an Indian jurist and economist, he was the principal creator of the constitution of India. However, the citizens of India call this occasion 'Equality Day'. Additionally, in 2016, the Government of India announced the date as Rashtriya Samarasata Diwas to respect Ambedkar's contributions to the country.
  • Vishu (April 14): The day of the Vishu festival is considered the Malayali New Year in the Kerala, Tulu Nadu and Mahe regions of Southern India. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) marked it as an April holiday, in which the people from the aforementioned region prepare and view colourful items the first thing on that day.
  • Biju (April 14): While the Biju festival is celebrated over 3 days, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has marked only 14th April as the official holiday. This April holiday is especially significant to the Chakma community, who regard it as their most important festival. On this occasion, the Chakma people come together to celebrate and showcase their rich cultural heritage and traditions.
  • Buisu Festival (April 14): In Tripura, the Buisu festival is celebrated for two days, but the RBI marked 14th April as the holiday. This festival is also celebrated as the junction of the ending of the old year and the beginning of a new year.
  • Maha Vishuva Sankranti (April 14): Maha Vishuva Sankranti is the traditional New Year Day festival of the Odia people. In this festival, people visit Lord Shiva, Shakti as well as Hanuman temples. They also take baths in rivers as well as participate in traditional dance and performances as a part of their ritual.
  • Tamil New Year's Day (April 14): Tamil New Year's Day is also an April holiday, which includes a traditional arrangement of festive foods. This occasion falls on 14 April and follows the spring equinox, when the sun shines over the equator. The first day of the traditional Tamil calendar is a listed holiday for people from both Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
  • Bohag Bihu (April 14): Bohag Bihu is commonly known as the Rangoli Bihu, which is celebrated in the middle of April. Since Assam is an agriculture-based state, the local cultivators celebrate the Bohag Bihu with their iconic dance ‘Bihu’. The first day of Bohag Bihu (14th) contains rituals of bathing and feeding cows and bullocks and tying them with new ropes.
  • Cheiraoba (April 14): The Cheiraoba festival is one of the most crucial festivals in Manipur, which is considered the beginning of the lunar new year for local people in Manipur. In this April holiday, the local Meiteis celebrate by cleaning houses and wearing beautiful traditional attires. In addition, they also offer traditional cuisines to the local deity with colourful flowers.
  • Bengali New Year’s Day (April 15): On Bengali New Year's Day, people from Assam, West Bengal and Tripura celebrate this day as the beginning of the spring season. In this April holiday, people exchange greetings by wishing each other “Shubho Noboborsho.” They celebrate this day with traditional food, dance and music.
  • Himachal Day (April 15): Himachal Day is also an April holiday, in which people make a grand parade in the capital city, Shimla. On this anniversary day of Himachal Pradesh, people also celebrate by participating in local events in the cities and villages to make the day memorable.
  • Garia Puja (April 21): For the people of Tripura, Garia Puja is considered an important festival, which takes place in the month of Boishakh. With seven days and nights, this festival is also known by other names Sangrain, Bihu and Boisabi.
