Thus, it is safe to say that the Guru Purnima festival does wield immense importance in India.

Guru Purnima Origin Story

According to the Yogic tradition, Guru Purnima was the day on which Lord Shiva was upheld as the very first Guru. About 15,000 years ago, a yogi visited the Himalayas. He was known to possess extraordinary abilities. The yogi stayed there as people came to visit.

Upon opening his eyes, he saw seven men ahead of him. They asked him to teach them whatever it was that he was experiencing. But the yogi decided not to reply. Instead, he closed his eyes once again.

He opened his eyes again after 84 years. The seven disciples were still waiting there. This made their hunger for wisdom clear to the yogi. So, on the full moon day, the yogi became the ‘First Guru’ or ‘Adi Yogi’, imparting his knowledge to the seven dedicated men.
