In this blog, we will walk you through everything you need to know about SBI debit card activation. We will also cover how to generate your SBI PIN via SMS, activate online transactions and get your SBI Visa contactless debit card up and running. So, let’s dive in.

Why You Need to Complete a New ATM Card Activation in SBI?
Whenever you get a debit card from any bank, it is sent in a deactivated state. This is a security measure designed to protect your money in case the card is lost or stolen in transit. To start using your card for ATM withdrawals, POS swipes or online shopping, you need to activate it and set up a secure PIN.
Depending on your convenience, SBI offers both online and offline methods to activate your debit card.
How to Activate SBI Debit Card Online?
Activating your SBI debit card online is quick, convenient and can be done from the comfort of your home. Here’s how:
Step 1: Log in to SBI Internet Banking using username and passwords.
Step 2: Next, go to ‘ATM Card Services’ and then on ‘e-Services.’
Step 3: Click on ‘New ATM Card Activation.’
Step 4: Choose the bank account number and then type in the last 4 digits of your debit card number.
Step 5: Finally, click on 'Activate' and confirm your activation request by entering the OTP received on your registered mobile number.
And you are done! Your new SBI debit card can now be utilised for both ATM and POS payments.
How to Activate SBI ATM Card Offline?
If you are not comfortable with internet banking, do not worry! SBI also allows offline activation using ATMs and SMS.
Activate via SBI ATM
This is the most traditional method of new ATM card activation in SBI.
Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Insert the bank-issued debit card into a nearby SBI ATM or any SBI ATM outlet.
Step 2: Choose ‘PIN Generation’.
Step 3: To authenticate the access, enter your 11-digit SBI account number.
Step 4: Enter your registered mobile number.
Step 5: You will get an OTP through a message.
Step 6: Now, remove your debit card from the ATM slot and re-insert it.
Step 7: Select ‘Banking’ and go to ‘Change PIN’.
Step 8: Type in the OTP instead of ‘Old PIN’ and then proceed to a new 4-digit PIN of your choice.
That's it. Your card is finally activated, and you can use it conveniently.
SBI PIN Generation via SMS
If you want to rely on the SBI PIN generation via SMS, then go through the following steps:
Step 1: Type PIN<space>CCCC<space>XXXX
Here, CCCC stands for the last 4 digits of your SBI debit card, whereas XXXX represents the last 4 digits of your bank account number.
Step 2: Forward the message to 567676 from your SBI-linked phone number.
You will see a temporary PIN on your mobile phone. Consider using this OTP at any SBI ATM to set your permanent PIN and complete your card activation.
Note: This method is valid for the initial PIN generation only.
How to Complete SBI Debit Card Online Transaction Activation?
Your debit card is automatically activated for ATM and in-store payments once you complete the above steps. However, to use it for online purchases, you need to enable online transactions manually.
You can do it by either downloading the SBI YONO App or using the Internet Banking portal. Here’s how:
Using SBI YONO App
- Log in to the YONO app.
- Tap ‘Service Request’ → ‘Debit Card Services’.
- Select ‘Manage Card’.
- Pick your debit card and activate online (e-commerce) payments.
