PPF Calculator

If you are a concerned parent wanting to save money for your child’s future or just started a new job, investing in PPF is ideal. But before investing in a PPF, checking your returns using a PPF calculator is always ideal.

Here, we will guide you on how to use a PPF calculator and how it is beneficial for your future financial goals.

When you think about managing your wealth, the first thought that comes to your mind is saving your money. But with several options to save your earnings, some always tend to prefer saving money in a risk-free deposit with assured returns. If you want the same, investing money in a Public Provident Fund or PPF scheme is a great option.

PPF account enables you to invest your valuable capital for a fixed tenure, generally long-term in nature. The interest rate on such investment is also high compared to other deposit schemes banks or NBFCs offer.

You can put money regularly on your PPF account as per your financial capability and, after the end of fixed tenure, which is generally 15 years, get a high return from the same to use it as per your financial plan.

What is a PPF Calculator?

A PPF calculator serves as a valuable online tool for approximating the growth of your investment in the Public Provident Fund (PPF) within a specified timeframe. PPF stands as a government-endorsed savings initiative characterised by a mandatory 15-year lock-in period and offers superior returns compared to alternatives like fixed deposits. Furthermore, it serves as a potent instrument for minimising your tax obligations during your professional years.

When you employ a PPF calculator, it employs the PPF formula to ascertain the total worth of your investment after a set number of years, considering a specific PPF account interest rate. Notably, a PPF account calculator can also facilitate retirement planning. Given the 15-year lock-in duration of PPF deposits, they present an excellent avenue for adopting a disciplined strategy towards retirement savings.

If you possess a predetermined retirement goal, you can utilise the calculator to analyse the necessary contributions over a designated period to attain your retirement objective. Nevertheless, it's crucial to bear in mind that the annual contribution limit for a PPF is capped at ₹1.5 lakh.

How Does a PPF Calculator Work?

A PPF calculator mainly works on a mathematical formula that calculates the interest to be earned on the invested amount along with the maturity value. Using a PPF interest calculator is very simple. Most calculators available online have a user-friendly interface, making it easy to use by an experienced as well as a novice individual.

You only need to input certain values that will yield the result of your interest and return amount. Nonetheless, you must remember that if you invest your funds in a PPF account on 1st April, the interest earned on the account will be calculated in the financial year.

Formula to Calculate PPF Returns

A PPF interest rate calculator generally uses the formula used to calculate future annuity value. This means the future returns of your investment are calculated as per the annual contribution made to the Public Provident Fund and the interest rate prevailing on that account. Changes made to the interest rate by banks or the Post Office generally happen during the start of a financial year.

Here is the formula used to calculate the return on your PPF deposit using a PPF calculator.

M = P [ ( { (1 + t) ^ n } - 1 ) / i ]

Here,

M = Maturity Value
P = Annual Payments
i = Interest Rate
n = Number of years

It is important to note that the section in the formula after P stands for the annuity factor. This, when multiplied by the annual PPF contribution, provides you with the maturity value of your investment. The use of this formula will be clear to you if implemented in an example.

Let us check the example below.

Suppose you want to contribute ₹1 lakh annually to your Public Provident Fund account. The present interest rate applicable is 7.1%, and the account will be for a tenure of 15 years.

Here,
P = ₹100,000
n = 15 years
i = 7.1%

By putting this information in the formula, the result for the maturity value of PPF will be -

M = ₹100,000 [ ( { (1 + 7%) ^ 15 } - 1 ) / 7% ] x (1 + 0.07)
M = ₹27,12,139

If there is a change in the rate of interest, you will have to calculate in the same way but for different tenures.

For instance, if the rate is 8% for the first 5 years and 7% for the next 5 years, you have to calculate the maturity value for 10 years at 8% on the deposited amount for the first 5 years and add it to the maturity value for 5 years at 7% on the deposited amount for the next 5 years.

If you want to calculate your returns every month, you can set your PPF calculator monthly, that is, yearly contributions ÷ 12. Nonetheless, the final result will be the same when setting the calculator to annual contributions.
