What is PAN?
A PAN card is a plastic card which is a proof of identity with the income tax department. It has a 10-digit alpha numeric number mentioned which does not change once allotted. It helps the department to identify the transactions such as tax payments, tax returns, etc.

What is PAN 2.0?
The PAN 2.0 project is an initiative which is launched in order to modernise the taxpayers registration services. This new PAN simplifies the process of issuing and managing both the PAN and TAN. PAN 2.0 is user-friendly and efficient as it combines multiple portal platforms and addresses the taxpayers requirements.
Currently, PAN-related services can be availed using three different portals such as Protean e-Gov portal, e-filling portal and the UTIITSL portal. This initiative will combine them into one unified portal which will manage PAN related services. This PAN 2.0 offers a new pan card to taxpayers with a QR code feature. The existing customers don’t really need to apply for a new PAN card.
How is PAN 2.0 Different from the Existing One?

Platforms Integration:
The existing setup is hosted by three different portals for the PAN related service but the new PAN 2.0 will combine all these and run on a single unified portal offering PAN and TAN end-to-end services.
Paperless process:
PAN 2.0 comprehensively uses technology which leads to a complete paperless and online process as against current mode.
Facilitates Taxpayer:
PAN 2.0 facilitates taxpayers with a free of cost allotment, updation or correction. It also offers e-PAN digitally sent to the registered e-mail ID. Existing PAN requires applicants to make a request with a minimal fee. The existing PAN includes fees of Rs. 50 for domestic with Rs 15+ India post charges for outside India delivery.
