Documents Required for Changing Name in Bank Account

When applying for a name change in your bank account you must have following documents to support and prove your new identity-

Notarised Name-Change Affidavit:

A stamp paper declaring name change with the old and new names and the reason for change.

Gazette Notification:

If you legally changed your name (not just marriage), you should publish the change in the government gazette and provide a copy. Some banks require this for legal name changes.

Newspaper Publications:

Certified copies of advertisements announcing your name change (usually in two newspapers, one English and one local). Banks may ask for these if you completed a full legal name change.

Marriage Certificate or Divorce Decree:

If the change is due to marriage or divorce, provide the marriage certificate or divorce decree to prove the event.

Updated Photo ID:

A government-issued ID (Aadhaar, PAN card, passport, or driver’s license) showing your new name. If you updated your name, ensure that your PAN and Aadhaar are also in the new name, as banks often verify against these.

Other KYC Documents:

Any other KYC documents the bank requires (proof of address, recent photos, etc.).

Documents can vary by bank so always check with your specific bank’s policy. In general, attach self-attested copies of all documents.

Points to Keep in Mind When Changing Name in Bank Account

When applying for name change in bank account, you need to keep few things in mind-

Update KYC (PAN/Aadhaar) First:

Ensure that your PAN card, Aadhaar, passport, and other ID proofs already show your new name. Banks verify name changes against these records.

New Cheques, Cards, Passbook:

Once your name is updated, request fresh cheque leaves, passbook pages, and ATM/debit cards with the new name. Old cheques and passbook entries may become invalid or confusing.

Linked Services:

Don’t forget to update other records linked to your account. This includes your PAN, Aadhaar, and tax records, as well as any investments, insurance policies, mutual funds, provident fund, etc. that use this account for verification or transactions. Inconsistent names across documents can cause problems in the future.

Minors’ Accounts:

If the account holder is a minor, the request must be made by a parent or legal guardian. The guardian must present the minor’s birth certificate and any other legal documents supporting the name change.

Adhering to the bank’s checklist and double-checking all details will help your request go through smoothly.

Conclusion

Changing your name in a bank account might seem like a time-taking task, but with the right documents and a clear understanding of the process, it can be handled smoothly. Whether your name change is due to marriage, divorce, legal reasons, or simply correcting a spelling error, updating it across all financial institutions is crucial for identity consistency and to avoid future transaction issues. Always check with your specific bank for their documentation requirements, and make sure your KYC details are updated before initiating the request.
